I-70 Mountain Corridor

During the Draft PEIS review and comment period, one of the most commonly stated concerns was that a long-term vision incorporating a multimodal transportation facility should be considered in the decision-making process. In order to respond to this concern, FHWA and CDOT are examining all multimodal alternatives not only for their ability to accommodate the 2025 planning horizon but also for their potential to meet the 50-year vision travel demand. The 50-year vision travel demand represents a higher volume than projected for 2025, on both the east and west sides of the Continental Divide. The results of this additional examination will be included in the Final PEIS.

The $4 billion threshold has been removed as a screening criterion for alternatives. Additional funding has not been identified, and removing this threshold does not indicate the availability of new funds. The Collaborative Effort team is reviewing the 21 alternatives from the Draft PEIS to recommend an alternative, and the Context Sensitive Solutions team is developing design guidelines for future Corridor projects.

A Draft PEIS was completed in 2004 and comments were received through May 2005. Completion of the Final PEIS is pending the results of an innovative collaborative effort between state/federal agencies and Corridor stakeholders to recommend an alternative for the I-70 Mountain Corridor. The objective of the collaborative decision-making process is to seek a consensus solution to transportation problems along the Corridor.
